Schlomer accepts head volleyball position at Edgewood
MADISON, Wis. -- Edgewood College athletic director Al Brisack
announced today that Paul Schlomer has been named head women's volleyball coach.
Schlomer was appointed interim coach of the Eagles' volleyball program on March
21, 2006 and served in that role through the duration of the spring practice and
training season.
“This is a very exciting opportunity and I'm looking forward to the challenge of
coaching at this level,” said Schlomer. “It's such an exciting environment, and
the program has a lot of potential currently and potential to get better fast.
One of the main reasons why I wanted this position is because the players gave
me 100 percent effort on the court [during spring practice] and do what it takes
to become a good team and achieve the goals we want as a program, which is to
win a conference championship.”
Since 2004, Schlomer was the head girls volleyball coach at La Follette High
School in Madison where he is credited with turning around the program by
recording back-to-back winning seasons in the Big Eight Conference. He guided
the Lancers to a 23-19 overall record in 2005. Schlomer was an assistant coach
at Madison East High School for three seasons prior to his stint at La Follette.
Schlomer's experience also includes head coach of the age 18 and under Wisconsin
Select club volleyball team in which he has compiled an 87-51 record from 2004
to 2006. Wisconsin Select earned a bid to the 2005 USA Volleyball Junior Olympic
Championships and finished second in the Asics Junior National Championships.
"Paul's desire to be a part of the Edgewood College community and clear plan to
lead our volleyball program to excellence made him an obvious choice to go
through the interview process,” said Brisack. “That process made it clear that
we did have the right person working with our volleyball student-athletes. Paul
will be an outstanding addition to our coaching staff. His love and commitment
to education and knowledge of volleyball are a perfect fit for the Eagles."
In addition to his coaching experience, Schlomer is a Ph. D candidate in
Political Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has been a lecturer
and teaching assistant at UW and Purdue University.
